Our Verdict: The Herman Miller Embody isn’t perfect… but it is pretty darn close.
The Herman Miller Embody’s high price tag is likely going to scare most users away. However, the term “you get what you paid for” is a term that really rings true for computer chairs.
There are serious dangers involved for anyone who sits at a computer or desk for long hours on a daily basis and who does so in a cheap chair. And, so, while a chair may be the last item you would think to (or would want to) make a heavy investment on, it is actually incredibly important that you pay for a high quality chair if you are sitting for long periods throughout the day.
And, of all the computer chairs and office chairs out there, perhaps none are better-built and offer better back support than does the Herman Miller Embody.
The Herman Miller Embody is a revolutionary chair that is built on advanced ergonomics and design. It offers superior comfort and design and all but eliminates the health problems that can be cause by sitting in lower-quality chairs that don’t provide the support necessary.
The Embody is not without some minor flaws, but on the true features that matter in a quality chair, it has no rivals. If you are someone who sits at a desk or a computer for long periods of time, whether working or playing games, and you value your back health, the Herman Miller Embody would be the chair I’d recommend for you.
|Dimensions||43.5″ (H) 29.5″ (W) 27″ (D)|
|Colors||Over 10 Different Options|
Herman Miller’s Embody brings just as unique of a design and style as it does incredible ergonomics. It is a mid back chair that brings that has a modern office feel to it.
The chair comes in over 10 different color options, ranging from all black, to peacock, to mulberry. So, the chances are good that if you have a specific color in mind, there is likely a color option available for you on the Embody.
The base color of the chair is black, but the fabric lining on the back of the chair and the seat comes in these multi-color options. Below is a few of the non-black color schemes that are available:
For me personally, I prefer the style of the all-black chair. There are a lot of unique color options, obviously, but I would hate to drop over $1,000 on a chair that would limit what I could and could not decorate with in my office.
Of course, many out there will enjoy the different color options as they will present the potential for the user to setup an office with a specific color scheme.
Revolutionary Ergonomic Design
The Herman Miller Embody may be the most ergonomic chair ever made. The chair was designed specifically to overcome the problems that can arise by sitting with poor posture or by sitting in a low-quality chair.
Many owners of the Embody have reported gaining better posture as a result of using the chair. And, many users who had back pain prior to using the Embody have reported a significant improvement in the health of their back.
While these results obviously aren’t guaranteed (because every user’s body type will be a bit different), the Embody’s design forces you to sit with better posture which will, in turn, take stress off of your back while you are sitting.
And, while other ergnomic chairs don’t offer quite as many options for adjusting the chair, the Herman Miller Embody is so adjustable that it will work well for a wide variety of user body types. However, while the amount of adjustment options is nice to have, for some users they can actually be a bit overwhelming, which has left some users sitting improperly in the chair.
So, if you are considering getting the Embody, just know that after you set it up, you should take some time adjusting it correctly to fit your body. You can get an adjustment guide straight from Herman Miller’s website and there are plenty of videos on YouTube that will show you how to do it as well.
Ultimately, though, Herman Miller’s ergonomic design is what makes the Embody stand out from the competition. And, if you are looking for an incredibly comfortable chair that will minimize—or eliminate altogether—the stress that is placed on your body when you sit, I don’t know if there is any better chair that will serve your needs than the Embody will.
Dimensions and Weight Capacity
The Herman Miller Embody is a chair that is designed to seat a wide range of users.
The chair measures in at 43.5″ tall, 29.5″ wide, and 27″ deep. The chair back can be adjusted as well and so the 43.5″ measurement is at the chairs highest point.
In terms of capacity, the Embody has a rated weight capacity of 300 lbs. This is actually a bit lower than the Herman Miller Aeron (350 lbs.) and Steelcase Gesture (400 lbs.), but still on par with the Steelcase Amia (300 lbs.), and it is rated hire than the Herman Miller Mirra 2 (265 lbs.)
So, if you do have a larger build and you need a more heavy duty chair, you’ll want to look elsewhere.
But for the majority of users the Embody should be able to accommodate your frame. And, again, of the users who do fall under the Embody’s weight capacity, the chair is designed with a ton of adjustability options so that all users are accomodated for.
The Embody definitely does not lack for important features. This is a chair that costs over $1,000 and still is able to get mostly rave reviews. And, typically, when a product in a certain market is significantly more expensive than the competition, but still gets an overwhelming amount of positive reviews, it is because it is a revolutionary product.
And, that’s what the Embody is…
1. A Chair that is “Healthy” to Sit In
Sitting is not an activity that the human body was designed to do. Or, at least, the human body wasn’t designed to sit for long periods of time.
In fact, many studies show that sitting for long periods of time can have a negative impact on our health and bodies.
And, typically, high-end chair designers set out to create chairs that minimized the effects that sitting had on the human body.
However, Jeff Weber and Bill Stumpf wanted to do something different with the Embody. They wanted to design a chair that didn’t just minimize the negative effects that sitting has on the body, but to actually design a chair that had positive effects on the body.
To help them do so, they brought in over 20 different physicians and doctors from various different fields of study to contribute insight and ideas in how to build a chair that actually delivered a “healthy” sitting experience.
The result is what many believe is the best chair on the market (if not ever made.)
Most users love the Embody and plenty have even seen improvements in back pain and posture, as well as a decrease in—or elimination of—fatigue from sitting all day long.
2. Improved Productivity
Many forward-thinking companies have purchased the Embody for their employees in an effort to increase workplace productivity. And, they are doing so with good results.
Because the Embody eliminates the negative effects long-term sitting can have on your body, many workers who use the chair have actually seen an increase in focus and productivity as a result.
The reasoning is pretty simple: the less time a worker has to spend adjusting in their seat or dealing with back pain caused by sitting, the more time they can work interrupted.
And, ultimately, this just really shows that, despite the high price tag on this chair, the value it brings will easily makeup for the cost. Because if you’re someone who works long hours at your computer and your livelihood depends on it (programmer, writer, online marketer, etc.) the less distractions you have the better.
3. Herman Miller’s 12-Year Warranty
If being considered by some to be the best chair ever made wasn’t enough, Herman Miller backs the Embody (as well as all of their other chairs) with an incredibly 12-year warranty.
That’s 12-years of peace of mind in knowing that your investment—and it is a significant investment with the Embody—is well protected.
Herman Miller prides themselves on the quality of their chairs and with a 12-year warranty they show that they are willing to back that quality up and ensure the best experience possible for their customers.
So, the good news is that, despite paying a hefty price up front for your chair, you’ll know that you’ll likely get a solid decade or so of use out of it (if you want to stretch it that far.)
The Herman Miller Embody won’t be for everyone. And, that is mostly due to its high price tag.
However, even if you can afford the Embody, it still might not be the best option for you.
It really just depends on your own personal needs.
So, who woul the Embody make sense for? Listed below are a few factors that will help you decided whether or not the Embody is a chair that you should consider purchasing:
- Budget is no concern and you want the best chair possible.
- You are someone who sits at their desk/computer for long periods of time.
- Good posture and back health are important to you.
These three factors alone won’t determine whether or not you should get the Embody, but they will definitely help give you an idea of whether or not it would be a chair that you should consider.
And, you could definitely get the Embody and be perfectly happy with it if you don’t plan on sitting in the chair for extended periods of time. However, in that case, you could likely spend less and still get a solid chair that will minimize the negative effects that sitting can have on your body.
In the end, though, whether or not the Embody is for you will mostly come down to your budget. It is a very expensive chair and give the fact that there are plenty of solid competitors, the high price tag might be hard to justify.
But the Embody does stand a step above the competition and so if you’re looking for the best chair on the market, you might want to at least look at the Embody (and sit in it if you have any local dealers) before passing on it to save a few bucks.
Trying to sell most people on a chair that costs over $1,000 is going to be a difficult task. However, for what the Embody brings to the table, it would be silly to say that it doesn’t deliver good value on its price.
Yes, there are plenty of good alternatives to be had at lower prices. But none quite match the Embody in terms of the overall package.
The Embody is easily one of the most comfortable chairs ever made. And, it’s ergonomic design will actually improve your posture and help eliminate any back pain caused by sitting for long periods of time.
And, with less distractions, the Embody will help you work longer and be more productive than ever before.
The price of the chair might be a little more concerning if Herman Miller didn’t back it with a 12-year warranty. However, with 12-years of protection, the high initial cost is a bit more tolerable as you can expect to get plenty of use out of it before you have to purchase another chair.
Ultimately, not everyone will want to fork out the hefty sum required to land the Embody, but if you are one of the few who are willing to spend to get one of the best chairs ever made, you probably won’t be disappointed in your decision.
